Becoming the Façade
This project is known as Photoillustration, where we were tasked with combining two dissimilar objects into one illusion demonstrating a human condition. This was possible using a digital camera for the photo shoot, and Adobe Photoshop software.
For my project, I took a photograph of a classmate- one with her holding a fan and one without- and then morphed the fan and her face so that the two became one. The end result- the picture on the far right- represents the idea of becoming the façade one puts up in public. Back in the day, such fans were common amongst ladies to hide any suggestive emotions and facial expressions- not just to stay cool during summertime. The fan represents the façade young women must wear in order to be accepted into society. Who they are in public may be very different from who they truly are, but their true selves usually get worn away and forgotten as these young women morph into the illusion they must create for society.
